Rensu's Eye Coloring Tutorial (ver 2.0)
Written: 06.27.2003
That old eye coloring tutorial needed to be revamped...
In this tutorial, we're going to take an eye from the previous tutorial, the Kawaii Eye Drawing Tutorial,
and turn it into a CG colored eye.
The first step in the process is taking your sketched eye...in this case, I used the first child like eye. Put in a photoshop
document with a background layer below it, then create a layer above the sketched eye.

The next step in the process is to use the Polygonal Lasso tool
and select the area
around the upper eyelid. After doing this, use the paint bucket
to fill that area with
solid black. Your eye should now look something like this:

The next step is the lower eyelid. I do this using the line tool, which is within the shape tools. Set the line weight to 2 px
and outline your lower eyelid by clicking and dragging. (Note: When you let go of the mouse after making each line, it is important
that you start the next segment from exactly where the one you just finished ended) When you are done making lines, it should have
created several new layers for each line. To fix this, you should hide your background and sketch layers (click the little eye icon
next to the layer name) and then select "Merge Visible" from the layer menu. You should have something like this now:

The next step is to repeat the previous step around the shape of the eye. Try to use short line segments so that there is still obvious
roundness to the eye ^_^ This is what we have now:

At this point, delete the sketch layer. Then make a new layer inbetween the background and the lineart of your eye. This is the layer
where your eye's coloring will go. Now, use the magic wand to select the area inside of the eye. When you have done this, you will
need to select the eye's primary color as your foreground color, and a darker shade of that color as the background color. Use the
gradient tool, and fill the eye with a gradient where the lighter color is at the bottom and the darker shade is on the top. With the area
inside of the eye still selected, select the paintbrush tool, and click the airbrush icon. Change the size of the airbrush so that it
is just larger than the width of the eye, and make sure that the hardness is 0% (this can be done with the brush palette menu).
Select pure black for the foreground color, and make as large of an area inside the eye as you wish black.
When you're satisfied with the amount of black, deselect everything, then create one final layer on top of all of the other layers.
This will be the layer where the shines are applied. Keep the airbrush/paintbrush tool on and select pure white instead of pure black.
Decrease the size of the brush to about 25 or 30 px and begin applying the large shine. To make smaller shines, just decrease the brush
size and spray away ^_^
With a few touch ups at the end, this is how my eye turned out:

Hope this tutorial has been a help ^_^
